“First Song”

In the beginning, the land was quiet. Music had many places to be in order to fill it with sound. Wind knew this and agreed to carry Music. Together the two traveled as far as Wind could go until Mountain snatched Wind out of the sky. Music fell to Mountain’s rocky face and could see there was much more land to travel. In landing, rocks gave out, clacking loudly on their way down. This startled Water, springing from Mountain as a rushing waterfall. Water, having been freed from Mountain, offered to take Music the rest of the way. Music traveled faster with Water, moving over and under and through the ground. They passed by a village and Man heard Music for the first time. He fell in love and wanted to hear more so he made a canoe to chase Music. The three traveled together until Music had filled the whole land. Man was very far away from the village by then. He wanted to turn back and share all that he had learned with the others but the current was too strong. Man had no choice but to drag his canoe through the woods. As he walked, he plucked a sound here and a sound there and threw them into the canoe until it was full. The sounds kept him company on his long journey. Many days and nights passed until Man returned to the village. The people were overjoyed to see him and danced, knocking the canoe over. All of Man’s sounds spilled into the jubilation and the first song was created.
